When buying a podengo
The podengo is a lovely breed and it is a good idea to read about it before bying the breed.
How is the breed, what should be considered before buying a puppy?
They are individuals just like us humans, and it can differ a lot between them. What one can think of is that the breed is a primitive type with a lot of energy, and it appreciates an active life with its owner. The podengo is originally a hunting dog and one should also be aware of its hunting instinct, which of course can be of varying degrees among the individuals. Podengon wants to keep track of his surroundings and is happy to warn his owner if he sees / hears something that should be noticed.
The podengo is a faithful companion. They are happy, very easy to learn and successful in activities that give them an outlet for their energy. And of course a wonderful and fun companion dog.
How about the health of the breed?
Podengon is basically a very healthy and long-lived breed, but there are some cases of Patellaluxation, Legg Perthes, CECS and PRA. However, many of these diseases can be prevented through healthy breeding, both the Swedish Kennel Club and the breed club have recommendations and breeding strategies for this.
As a puppy buyer you can be active when choosing from which breeder you want to buy your puppy. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – a serious breeder will be happy to answer. Ask, for example, if the breeder is affiliated to the breed club, but above all to the Swedish Kennel Club, if they follow their recommendations, and what health tests they have done on the parent animals. In order for a dog to enjoy its owner, it needs to have the conditions to be healthy. The dog will hopefully be with you for many years so it is good to find out as much as you can from the beginning.
On SKK’s website you can read that many of the most common hereditary diseases are registered by the Swedish Kennel Club, and you therefore have the opportunity to check for yourself that the parental animals have been tested healthy by searching in SKK Breeding data and SKK Dog data.
Under the tab Health of the Podengo at this website you can read more about what the above diseases means.
In Sweden, according to SKK’s list, there are approximately 30 breeders of the Podengo Português breed. On the Breeders tab here on our website you will find many of them, and also a number of breeders in other countries. A tip is to contact, and maybe even meet the breeder/breeders who have just the kind of podengo that you are interested in, a good relationship with the breeder who is there as support even after the puppy purchase, is a security for you.
Great joy with a new little family member!
